Unit rate build-up calculator

Test the arithmetic behind a unit rate without hiding the method. Enter costs in any one currency, document the basis of each input, then review the result before using it in an estimate or BOQ.

This arithmetic does not validate quantities, productivity, specification, market evidence or the correct contractual treatment of mark-ups.

01 / METHOD

What the calculator does

It adds material, labour and plant as direct cost, applies overhead to that direct cost, then applies profit to the subtotal after overhead.

Rate = (M + L + P) + OH + Profit

That is one transparent convention, not a universal contractual rule. Your organization, client or measurement method may require a different mark-up basis.

02 / REVIEW

A number is not yet evidence.

A defensible rate explains where each input came from and when it was valid. Compare quotations, normalize their scope and keep a basis-of-estimate note. Where prices move rapidly, set a review date rather than treating the rate as evergreen.

QS Fieldbook deliberately does not supply a supposedly universal “current market rate.” Market conditions, specification, logistics and buying power vary too widely.

Professional note

Software can improve consistency and expose assumptions. It cannot decide whether the specification, productivity or commercial allowance is appropriate for your project.

BillMate lets you reuse rate build-ups, record provenance and bring them into a structured BOQ workflow.
